Rafael Nadal Wins Mutua Madrid Open for 5th Title of the Year

Rafael Nadal won his fifth title since returning from a knee injury by beating Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2, 6-4 Sunday for the Madrid Open championship. It was his seventh final this year since his come-back from his seven-month lay-off. Cheered on by the home crowd at the Caja Magica, the fifth-ranked Nadal cruised to his 55th career title and extended his head-to-head record with the Swiss to 9-0. “I’m very happy, and maybe this victory is even more special considering how complicated this year has been,” Nadal said. “This tournament couldn’t have gone better for me. The King of Clay captured his 40th career clay title, matching Thomas Muster for the second-most in the Open Era, and joined Roger Federer as the only other three-time Madrid champ. He added to his triumphs in 2005 and 2010.
