Rafa Beats Nishikori Despite Blisters and Busting his Shoes
Hampered by weeping blisters that required thick strapping around four of his fingers and the palm of his racquet hand, and infuriated by warnings for coaching and time violations, Rafael Nadal outlasted Kei Nishikori to confirm his place in the quarter-final of the 2014 Australian Open against Grigor Dimitrov tomorrow. The 13-time major winner also tripped in the first set and tumbled to the court, then had to go to the locker room to change shoes. After slipping on the court his shoe laces broke… not due to a faulty lacing system (common problem with CB 4.3), but due to contact with the surface. Nadal is trying to win the Australian Open for the second time — his first title came in 2009. It is the only major he hasn’t won at least twice.
